Cup Awards Press Release
The
Absa Cup Awards were hosted at the Indaba Hotel in Johannesburg
from 13h30 to 16h30 today. 2006 Absa Cup Champions Kaizer Chiefs
were officially awarded the Absa Cup Trophy, which they will no
doubt proudly display in their cabinet for the next year.
2006 Absa Cup Tournament Awards were as follows:
Coach of the Tournament = R30 000
Criteria:
For
the most consistent coach throughout the tournament. One who managed his team
well technically, with good match decisions, ensuring their progression in the
Absa Cup. One who handles himself well both on and off the field.
Nominees:
Ernst Middendorp – For guiding Kaizer Chiefs through tough opposition,
Supersport United, Black Leopards, Sundowns and then Pirates in the Final.
Neil Tovey and Miguel Gamondi – Wins over Golden Arrows, Bloemfontein
Young Tigers and Mabopane Young Masters got them a shot at Kaizer Chiefs. They
lost the semifinal on penalties, but outplayed Chiefs on the day. Worthy candidates.
Mlungisi Ngubane – Took a relegation-haunted team past Ajax in Cape
Town, Santos and Wits before losing to Orlando Pirates in the semifinal.
Winner: Ernst Middendorp – Kaizer Chiefs
He had a tough run in the Cup, beating three top league teams, Supersport United,
Black Leopards and Sundowns. But above all he is quickly becoming the gentleman
of SA football.
Moment of Brilliance = R20 000
Criteria:
For
the Player who had a superb “Moment of Brilliance” which stands head
and shoulders above any other moment, and contributed to his team winning a match
at any stage during the tournament. A Turning point in the game that affected
his teams’ victory on the day. Consistency by the player throughout the
tournament should also be considered.
Nominees:
Rowen Fernandez – His heroics in the Final won the cup for Chiefs.
Saved Tico Okonkwo’s long-range effort, saved Isaac Chansa’s penalty
and scored the winning penalty. What more do you want?
David Mathebula – Comes on against Supersport United with the game
0 - 0 and makes an immediate impression. He creates the first goal scored by
Louis Agyemang before scoring one himself.
Cecil Oerson – Scores an early opener against Dynamos who equalise
after 30 minutes. Five minutes later Oerson strikes a brilliant volley, which
sneaks in at the near post to give Swallows the win.
Winner: No doubt Rowan Fernandez – Kaizer Chiefs
He had a superb Absa Cup Final, clinching the Cup for Chiefs and he also pulled
off heroics in the semi-finals.
Top Goal Scorer = R40 000
Louis Agyemang – Kaizer Chiefs with 4 goals
Player of the Tournament
= R40 000 & a 2litre Ford Focus SI
Criteria:
For
the most outstanding play during the Absa Cup. One who played a key role in his
team’s progress in the Absa Cup. A player who shows a great temperament
during the game and inspires the rest of his team. A team player and leads by
example.
Nominees:
Patrick Mayo – A star performance at centre back against Sundowns,
a good display at centre back in the Final and two decent displays at left back
as well. This, all from a player who was a converted from a striker last season.
Andre Arendse – Never conceded a goal throughout, except for the
penalty shootout against Chiefs. Solid showing by the veteran.
Gift Leremi – Scored against Hanover Park and set up many attacks
and was the Kick Off star player against FS Stars. Did well in the Final, but
did not produce a match-winning performance.
Siyabonga Nomvethe - Last 32 – He was instrumental when Pirates
played Free State Stars. He was all over them. In Last 16 – Scored 2 goals
against PJ Stars. In Last 8 – Created endless opportunities for Pirates
leading to goals. In Last 4 – Had an average game. Finals – he scored
a goal – that was later disallowed. He had a shot on goal in 10th minute
hitting the crossbar, creating many chances for Pirates.
Winner: Patrick Mayo – Kaizer Chiefs
He made sure Chiefs got to the Absa Cup Final and he certainly played a major
role in them winning it as well! He played different positions in the two games,
showing his versatility within the team. A worthy winner.
